This article unfolds the following thesis: The linear theory of economic growth did not beget a perspective capable of articulating economic and social aspects in its approach to science and technology development for the Latin American region. In order to clarify this point the article presents, in the first place, the analysis of a sui generis case: Argentine. In the second place, it discusses the assumptions implied in the theory of economic development and the vision of science and technology which stems from it. Finally, it presents an approach wich permits to articulate an economic view on science and technology with a sociology of the actors and with a theory of modernization as cultural and social process.
