This article presents four models of scientific growth, special attention being given to their political-administrative outlines, with the aim of inferring in each instance the kind of relationships that the scientific community establishes with the government as supplier of resources and legitimacy. Finally, the author introduces some concepts and distinctions particularly relevant to scientific research within Latin American universities.
