During the last years there has been a growing controversy on the limitations of traditional indicators (spenditure on research and development, number of patents, etc.) that measure the informal and incremental features which increasingly characterize the innovation processes in firms. In this sense, the present article points out the need to complement traditional indicators with qualitative ones. The aim is to present an ananlytical model which would incorporate these new features, making possible a discussion of the limitations of traditional indicators for the measurment of innovative activities of firms. Some advances in the construction of an alternative methodology, developed out of a kind of indicator that includes variables determining the informal and incremental processes of innovation, are also discussed.
