Abstract

This paper analyzes the notebook that Humboldt had on his trip to Italy (1805), an object forgotten among his papers and sketchbooks. This notebook represents the departing point of the research plot that is presented in the following pages: an inquiry on the articulation of traveling practices, writing techniques, and the construction of science in Humboldt’s work, and a historical and epistemological discussion on the practices and goals of scientific traveling around 1800.
