Abstract

This work analyzes the modifications in the relations between scientists and warfare from the beginnings of modernity until our days, by questioning the links between scientific research and scientific responsibility. The author attempts to show how, the more scientist have been involve in war, the more they have lost independence and gained “bad conscience” as result of their actions. Hence, one of the most problematic issues is the ambivalence of scientist over their research object and the few concerns showed when developing weapons against humanity. The other side of this issue is the active compromise of some scientists for peace and the resolution of conflicts. However, given the changes in world’s scenario and the emergence of conflicts dominated by a “demonization of the other”, its resolution cannot be a matter of scientific rationality but of society and politics.
