This article aims to research the social-technical construction of the misoprostol. In order to achieve this, the way in wich the G D Searle & Co. Laboraty scientists built the device, will be explored. First of all we can point out that the indications and contraindication of this drug, were centred on the applications within the field of gastroenterology. Secondly, we will take a look at the case of Brasil, by putting emphasis on the reconstruction of the contraindication that the brazilian woman made, by using the misoprotol as an abortion method.
In the following investigation medical journals from the 1970, 1980 and 1990s will be used as main sources. In order to recostruct the constext of registration in the field of gastroenterology for the misoprostol, the first publications among internacional journals in 1970, in wich its results were published before the drug was approved, had been relieved. In the first five years of the 80’s, the pre-clinical trials needed for approval and its later commercialization – first in animals and then in humans- publications in the highest impact journals within the field of medicine, were carried out. Finally, four international publications analysing brazilian women’s practices, regarding to the use of misoprostol as an abortion method, are listeted next.
